The show “Tin Pan Alley” celebrates jazz and popular music from the 1920s to 1950s. Backed by its own jazz quintet, La Troupe’s singers will take you back to a time of pure entertainment, flirtation, true love and all-round good cheer.
The phrase “Tin Pan Alley” refers to the popular music that dominated the American music scene from the end of the 19th to mid-20th century. It’s the music that many of us grew up with --music that lifts the soul and brightens the landscape.
Our show features songs by some of the greatest names of the era: Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, Hoagy Carmichael, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Dorothy Fields and Duke Ellington. There’s also a medley of greatest hits by Manhattan Transfer, a vocal quartet founded in the early 1970s, to illustrate the influence that American jazz of the first half of the century has had on succeeding generations of musicians.
Under the artistic direction of Christine Harel, and with several original arrangements by musical director and jazz pianist Antoni Carlone, La Troupe has brought this music to life once more. It’s a vocal big band for modern times. From the first few notes, “Tin Pan Alley” will have you snapping your fingers and tapping your feet.
